Everybody knows, what heart, lung and stomach do. But the liver is a mystery to many people. At the same time, it is the largest gland in the human body and a multi-functional metabolism organ, without which our body would not work and we could not live. The organ with an approximate weight of one and a half kilograms is actually responsible for complex metabolism processes, stores vitamins, fats and sugar, produces hormones, proteins, and digestive juices, contributes to fat digestion, and is our endogenous detoxification organ No. 1. The role of our liver is almost unbelievable and really fantastic.
To better understand it, we take a closer look at the most important tasks and functions of our liver:
Everything we eat and drink initially reaches stomach and intestine and is broken down in there. The nutrients, like fat and sugar, and the vitamins are then transported via the portal vein to the liver, which resides—protected by the ribs—directly below the diaphragm in the right upper belly. All pollutants are also transported to the liver via the portal vein for natural detoxification.
Roughly 300 million liver cells take care of the different substances, which reach the liver on this way. At first, the liver cells perform an important filtering function, because via this way, approximately 1.5 l blood (= 2,000 l per day) flow through the liver. The substances, which are resorbed into the blood stream in the intestine are immediately filtered in the liver cells and, depending on demand, immediately utilized, stored, converted, or decomposed.
For example, the sugars, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements are processed, stored, and dispensed back into the organism on demand. If, for example, the eyes require vitamin A—the liver depot dispenses this vitamin. If the bones need vitamin D—it is also retrieved from the liver. Is ferric required for oxygen transport? The liver is also responsible for this and dispenses this trace element. The immune system of our body urgently requires protein? The liver will react immediately and will provide the defense system of our body with the required immune substance, so he can effectively fight intruders, which might cause illness otherwise. The liver is also a depot of nutrients for all purposes. It stores many of the substances we consume with our diet, and without which we could not live.
But the liver cells also produce or synthesize many important substances (synthesis function). From protein components, the liver actually builds many important proteins. So it, for example, produces coagulation factors, which lead to blood coagulation in case of injuries, and the C-reactive protein (CRP), which plays a key role in case of inflammations in the body. Furthermore, it produces proteins for the transport of fats and hormones in the body. Moreover, it produces the protein albumin—which is, amongst other things, required to keep the “body water” in the vessels. Also a major part of the endogenous cholesterol is produced and utilized by the liver, to compose bile. The liver produces roughly 1 liter of bile daily, which makes fats from the diet digestible.
The liver also has a key role—as already mentioned above—in the detoxification of harmful substances, which form in the body during digestive processes, or which enter the body from outside (detoxification organ).
In the human metabolism, toxic substances constantly form. The liver converts them to harmless substances, for example poisonous ammonia to non-poisonous urea. Alcohol is also rendered harmless by the liver: Per hour and per 10 kilograms of body weight, the liver can decompose approximately 1 gram of alcohol by converting it into acetic acid and then on to fat.
Unfortunately, we often ingest toxic substances with our diet (herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, etc.) and medication. But also via the skin or our respiratory system, we often ingest toxic substances (cue: pollution by chemicals).
One permanent task of the liver is to filtrate all these toxic substances from the blood and render them harmless. Only then, the neutralized toxins can be excreted via the kidneys or the intestine.
The liver works daily, 24 hours—around the clock, without any holiday. To manage this workload, the liver has a very strong and simply fantastic ability of regeneration, in particular compared with other organs of the body. If the liver is damaged, injured, or even if a part of it dies off, the affected liver tissue can form again. The precondition for this regeneration, however, is, that the reason for the injury has been removed and less than 50% of the functional mass of the organ was impaired.
Although our liver has this great natural regeneration capability, the natural function of the liver can be negatively influenced and impaired due to different factors in our everyday life, namely by:
- one-sided and unhealthy nutrition (e.g. high-fat diet)
- medication
- environmental toxins
- alcohol
The problem is, that our liver is not able to inform us about a possible overload or impairment of its functions by corresponding signals. The reason for this is, that the liver is not streaked with neurons, which would enable it to communicate with our consciousness.
But we can receive indirect signals by other reactions of our body, which may possibly be traced back to an impaired or overloaded function of our liver. This also relates thereto, that the function of our liver more or less influences all other organs of our body. Such signals can therefore be fatigue, listlessness, feeling of fullness, flatulence, overweight, insomnia, and higher susceptibility to infections. Even pain the back and head, or other unpleasant impairments of our body may, in the worst case, be traceable to an impaired or overloaded function of the liver for a longer period.
Amongst other things, the liver can be responsible for all those unpleasant consequences and many more. In the final consequence, a healthy liver is a precondition for a healthy body. A regularly strong liver is therefore one of the most important preconditions for a regularly strong body.
But how can I actively support my liver with their tasks?
Now, besides a healthy lifestyle, a balanced and healthy diet is the foundation for a sustained healthy function of the liver. But as far as due to daily life—intended or unintentional—an overloading of our liver is impending, mother nature’s garden provides special treasures to us.
